Why You Should Install Ceiling Fan?

There is only one thing constant in this world and that is change. The changing times also changed the taste and preferences of people which moved from hand fan to ceiling fan to coolers to air conditioners. But there are few things that retain its magnetism and utility withstanding the tests of time. Ceiling fans are one of those things which are still preferred by many because of its aesthetics, money saving and space saving capacity, its environmental conditions as well as for its convenience.

Some ceiling fans can even be further customized and can also be provided with or without built in lighting be it spot light or diffuse light or frosted glass or any other and this overhead light is ideal for a playroom or dining room or any other place of choice. Besides it is attractive, it is also practical for all classes and an energy saving device. Even if there is a central heat or air conditioner installed in the respective room or hall, the ceiling fans help lower the energy consumption and the electric bill thus contributing to the savings of the household as it lowers the room temperature by eight degrees as per facts noted. And unlike an air conditioner which requires regular servicing to function properly, the ceiling fan does not require a lot of maintenance apart from regular cleaning.

Benefits of ceiling fans
As they reduce energy consumption they are in turn environmental friendly as well as it reduces carbon footprint. Moreover, to personnel with allergies ceiling fans are better than central air conditioning as moulds can grow in vents and ducts if not properly cleaned and serviced on a regular basis. Ceiling fans are similar to floor fans with the added advantage of space clearance and they provide inherent safety as well with children and pets which is certainly not the case in standalone units.

Another aspect is that its wiring is nicely hidden from the view unlike standalone units which involve long cords laid across the floor for tipping and other hazards. Moreover, the blades of ceiling fans differ in length and the longer the blades of the fan, it provides better and wider circulation especially for larger rooms. There are even such models available that are remote control operated which adds to the convenience of ceiling fans with its capability to adjust added lighting, fan speed, switching it on or off or any other feature that accompanies the automation.

How Does Ceiling Fan Cools Down A Room?

Simply love those ceiling fan? Living in a hot and humid climate such as Hong Kong, it is necessary for one to possess a device or some way of cooling oneself down or lowering the temperature of the area around the person, especially in an enclosed area. Technology has blessed us with a variety of gadgets to do so, such as the air conditioner, standing fan and ceiling fan. Then there’s also the traditional way of cooling yourself down, using a hand-made fan to fan yourself. However, in this article, we will be discussing about an age old traditional gadget which has withstood the test of time and still in use nowadays – the ceiling fan.

Ceiling fans originated from United States of America in the mid-19th century and has been in used throughout the world since then. Hong Kong is no exception and ceiling fans are still a common sight within Hong Kong. You can still see them at coffee shops, hawker centres, some traditional shop houses, and even at some peoples’ houses. Despite the fact that ceiling fans are still widely used, few people really understand how it works and how it cools down a room. On the surface, it seems like you just switch on, and the blades will start turning and this in turn will result in cool air and breeze being produced. To change the strength of the fan, either adjusts the knob by the side or to pull a string attached to the ceiling fan. Superficially, it will appear like this to many people. So how does it work exactly?

Basically, the above superficial answer is a pretty good summary as to how a ceiling fan works. A ceiling fan is made up of a few key components, the power source which is the switch, the motor, and the fan blades. When the switch is switched on, an electrical current will be generated and it will travel towards the fan motor. Through the movement of the electrical current near the motor, a magnetic field will be generated and it will exert a force on the electrical energy circulating the motor, converting it into mechanical energy which will in turn be transferred to the coils which is attached to the blades, causing the coils to move. The turning motion of the coil will result in the blades to move as well and this is what we see – the spinning of the fan blades. The spinning motion of the fan blades will create an air draught, which causes cool air to sink and hot air to rise. This allows us who are under the fan to feel the cool breeze generated and cause air to circulate within the designated area. Do note that a ceiling fan doesn’t lower the temperature of the surroundings like an air-conditioner, but it just causes air circulation and a cool breeze.

Ceiling fans are the bread and air conditioner are butter in nowadays Hong Kong. They are commonly seen outdoors in shopping centers and restaurants or house patios. They are the number one indoor and outdoor cooling device, and works differently from the more appealing air conditioner. A ceiling fan generates the surrounding air flow while the air conditioner lowers the temperature of the surrounding air to balance evenly around the area. Furthermore, an air conditioner is mounted on the side of the wall while the ceiling fan is installed directly above us which air travel all over 360 degrees.

Hong Kong Red Hot Summer

Hong Kong’s hot and humid weather during the summer and spring has been a torture. Ceiling Fans were used before air conditioning was invented. It is affordable, easy to install and operate. It provides substantial savings on energy and offers another alternative to air-conditioning.

Many of us overlook the benefits and advantages of ceiling fans compared to air conditioners. Although after the introduction of air conditioning systems in the market the demand of ceiling fans has decreased but even today it is considered as the basic requirement of every home. The air conditioning systems not only consumes a lot of energy; it also doesn’t make your wallet feel good. Also, it is affecting the environment to a large extent. One of the reasons of increasing global warming is usage of air conditioners. Using air conditioners can also affect your health as it deprives you of fresh air. Cooling your house with ceiling fans can be healthy as well as save money and energy.

Looking at all the benefits of the ceiling fan, one should try to avoid the usage of air conditioners and take full advantage of the ceiling fans.

There are various types of fans available in the market. There are the standings fans, where they can stand on the floor or bay window, and those shorter standing fans or box fans that can be placed on tables. Standing and box fans are convenient as they can be moved easily from place to place where wind is required.

On the other hand, ceiling and wall fans are fixed to the ceiling and wall, respectively, thus restricting their mobility. However, standing and box fans take up space and seriously look out of place in an elegantly designed room! Both wall and standing fans are similar in how they blow the air i.e. they blow the air forward and as they oscillate, the air will be circulated around the room. Ceiling fans blow the air downwards and circulates the air within the location it is mounted, making the room breezy and cool.

How to Clean Ceiling Fan

- Make sure the power is off at the electrical panel box before you attempt any cleaning or maintenance.

- Because of the fan’s natural movement, some connections may become loose. Check the support connections, brackets, and blade attachments twice a year. Make sure they are secure. (it is not necessary to remove fan from ceiling.)

- Use only a soft brush or lint-free cloth to clean your fan periodically to avoid scratching the finish. The plating is sealed with a lacquer to minimize discoloration to tarnishing. Do not use water when cleaning, this could damage the motor, or the wood, or possibly cause an electrical shock.

- There is no need to oil your fan. The motor has permanently lubricated bearings.

Ceiling Fan Blades Material

Ceiling Fan Blades Material

Ceiling fans are made of different materials e.g. plastic, wood and metal and come in various designs.

Acrylic blade fans
You can also look for acrylic. Acrylic material has the capacity to resist moisture and thus prevents the blades from getting corroded. Thus usually outdoor usage with undercover. This would help in prolonging the life span of the fan.

Wooden blade fans

Wooden fans provide that extra bit of safety when compared to the Acrylic fans and Metal fans. Most of the wooden fans come in the form of three, four blade fans and five blade fans.

What Ceiling Fan Size is Right for My Room?

Want to install ceiling fan for your home? Ceiling fans can serve as efficient alternatives to the more expensive to install and maintain air conditioner units. The immediate cooling effect of fans when turned on is another attraction that air conditioners can’t yet match. While most of us have in mind the kind of style to match our home decor, we are often at a loss when it comes to choosing the right ceiling fan size in relation to our room size.

Does size matter? You bet it is, and it is important to know that ceiling fan size is just one of the many vital factors that determine whether you will get the effects you want. Therefore, please give some thoughts to the various factors can put you to the right decision.

Among the many guidelines, the golden rule to follow is to choose the biggest fan that will fill your room without appearing too overpowering. Smaller fans can’t stir up the same airflows as would bigger ones, and air circulation will therefore not be as effective. Where conditions permit, allow yourself a bigger one. It is worthwhile to invest just that little more so that everyone experiences lesser discomfort and stay happier.

When we position ourselves under the moving blades of ceiling fan, we experience the most effective cooling sensation that it can produced. This air rotation that the blades produce becomes increasingly less felt when we gradually drift away from this position. At about 0.6 meters away, this airy loss becomes very pronounced. What this means is that you may be placing your fan directly in the middle of your room, but if you are placing your sofa set 1.2 meters away from it, you’re in for a big disappointment. It goes to say that apart from room size, where you install your fan will also determine whether you will get the cooling effect you required; your room layout is just as important and you need to give some thoughts to it.

The next thing to consider has something to do with visual feel. Do you know that colors can play tricks to your eyes? If you are not careful, the wrong mix can put things to your disadvantage. Conversely, if you use them well, you can turn things around and dramatically improve the situation. Let’s assume that you have a room that is not very big, which has a ceiling that is not too high or not too low, just the usual type. If your furnishings are all in dark browns and you choose a fan of the same color tone, hoping that it will blend well with your settings, you are in for a surprise. The fan appears as though it is just above your head. This is worst if ceiling is also coated with the same color, but of course no one is going to do that.

To make the fan appear higher, it is better to choose one of a smaller size. But your next disappointment will be the weak airflow that the smaller fan is driving. You can however, easily get around this problem by getting a usual size fan that shares the same color scheme as your ceiling. In this way, you can eliminate the false illusion of an over lowly mounted fan and at the same time enjoy the good moving air from a little bigger fan.

Safety concerns with installation

A typical ceiling fan weighs between 15 and 50 pounds when fully assembled. Solid concret ceiling is essential for installing ceiling fan as two bolt screws will be inserted into concret ceiling to hang the ceiling fan. Major concern with installing a ceiling fan relates to the height of the blades relative to the floor. American law states that no fan can be mounted with its blades closer than seven feet from the floor, otherwise potentially causing injury. Residential ceiling fans are, apparently by design, largely incapable of causing more than minor injury, having low-torque motors that slow down quickly when blocked, and blades composed of light materials that tend to break easily if impacted at speed. More powerful industrial ceiling fans with steel blades proved capable of causing injury and laceration, but still lost energy rapidly once blocked.

Wobbling

Wobbling is caused by the weight of fan blades being out of balance with each other. This can happen due to a variety of factors, including blades being warped, blade irons being bent, blades or blade irons not being screwed on straight, or blades being different weights or shapes or sizes (minute differences matter). Also, if all the blades do not exert an equal force on the air (because they have different angles, for instance), the vertical reaction forces can cause wobbling. Wobbling is not affected by the way in which the fan is mounted or the mounting surface.

Ceiling fan tend to move during operation due to the fact that they are not generally rigidly mounted- if they were, they could generate excessive ceiling vibration and stress on their Mountings.

Movement of a couple of centimeters is quite acceptable and does not suggest the fan will fall down.

Ceiling fans are mounted very securely on steel brackets with rubber cushioning or with ball-joints to allow free movement.

Please note that all ceiling fans are not the same, even in the same model – some may move more or less than others.

Contrary to popular misconception, wobbling will not cause a ceiling fan to fall. Ceiling fans are secured by clevis pins locked with either split pins or R-clips, so wobbling won’t have an effect on the fan’s security. To date, there are no reports of a fan wobbling itself off the ceiling and falling. However, a severe wobble can cause light fixture shades or covers to gradually loosen over time and potentially fall, posing a risk of injury to anyone under the fan, and also from any resulting broken glass. It is important that, when installing the fan, the installer closely follows the manufacturer’s instructions with regard to using proper mounting screws. It is also important that all screws (especially the set screws which hold twist-on downrods in place) be tight, and any ceiling fan light fixtures are properly assembled with their shades and covers securely attached.
